While many focus solely on the physical aspects to wellness, it is equally important to pay attention to our emotional and spiritual health. Our body is a beautifully intricate machine in which the physical, emotional and spiritual work together to keep us strong. Each element depends on the other for our well-being. Treating one aspect, while ignoring another, is a recipe for dis-ease.
A problem in our physical health may lead to mental health issues, and a problem with the state of our mental health may lead to physical problems. In order to achieve true health, our physical, emotional, and mental wellness must be in balance. We are not just the mind, body, soul or spirit, but a sum of the whole.
The field of epigenetics focuses on the mind/body connection. Epigenetics teaches that our thoughts impact every aspect of our body, all the way down to a cellular level. This means that when we say things like, “my family has heart disease so I will have heart problems,” or “my mother was depressed so I will suffer from depression, too,” we are predicting outcomes that do not have to be true.
We are not predestined to any fate. The mind and body work together and when we realize that, we have tremendous power over our health!
